Movie critic Roger Ebert is to be made an honorary life member of the Directors Guild of America.

Michael Apted, the filmmakers’ union’s president, said Ebert had been keeping directors “on their toes for more than 40 years”.

Adding: “From the blockbuster to the tiny independent film, Ebert has devoted his career to sharing his love of film with generations of moviegoers.”

Ebert, 66, will receive his honor in January at the Guild’s award dinner.
